The son of Zeus set out on his quest with help from the Greek gods — receiving a mirrored shield from Athena, a sword from Hephaestus, sandals with gold wings from Hermes, and the helmet of invisibility from Hades. The demi-god attacked Medusa whilst she was sleeping, using the shield to avoid her deadly glare. As Medusa was the only mortal sister, Perseus was successful in his quest as he beheaded her with his sword from Hephaestus. In Metamorphoses by Roman poet Ovid, which tells the story of Medusa, the poet writes that Medusa was originally a beautiful maiden who was raped by Neptune in a temple that was owned by Greek goddess, Minerva. When the goddess of wisdom found out about the rape, she punished Medusa by having her hair transformed into vicious snakes.
